Dancing with the Stars fans have a new reason to catch see (or see again!) the Broadway dance hit Burn the Floor: Popular DWTS pros Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kym Johnson will join the cast on November 27 at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. Maks appeared in the first three weeks of the Broadway run (including opening night on August 2), partnered with his then-fiancee Karina Smirnoff; Johnson will make her Broadway debut after having been an original cast member of Burn the Floor in 1999. The Broadway production of Burn the Floor has extended twice and is scheduled to run through January 10, 2010.
In addition to his work on Dancing with the Stars (in which he was most recently partnered with actress Debi Mazar), Chmerkovskiy is a choreographer and dance instructor who worked with Franco Dragone to update the popular performance show Le Reve at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.
Johnson began training in ballroom dance at age 13 and went on to reign as the Australian Champion. In 1997, she performed at Sir Elton John's 50th birthday party in London in a ballroom number that formed the inspiration for Burn the Floor. She then toured in the show from 1999 to 2004. Johnson is still competing in the current season of Dancing with the Stars as the partner of Donny Osmond. In previous seasons, she partnered Broadway vets Jerry Springer and Joey Fatone.
Burn the Floor is created, directed and choreographed by Jason Gilkison. The Broadway cast is composed of award-winning international dancers, including Henry Byalikov, Sharna Burgess, Artem Chigvintsev, Kevin Clifton, Sasha Farber, Jeremy Garner, Anya Garnis, Gordana Grandosek, Patrick Helm, Sarah Hives, Melanie Hooper, Pasha Kovalev, Peta Murgatroyd, Giselle Peacock, Nuria Santalucia, Mirko Sciolan, Sarah Soriano, Damon & Rebecca Sugden, Trent Whiddon, Damian Whitewood, Robin Windsor and vocalists Ricky Rojas and Rebecca Tapia.
